Chronology of cameras Butcher
The Maxim No. 1 box camera is not represented in the same way in all the catalogs we put online. This can be explained either by an evolution of the model over the years, a change of manufacturer in the case of outsourcing, or simply by a lie of omission in the catalogs. In the latter possibility, it is common for a distributor to dedicate only one page of its catalog to a complete series of cameras and to depict only the most luxurious or advanced model in engravings. Sometimes, the description is quite vague about the differences between models, relying on the most favorable description.
In the case of the Maxim series, what is certain is that the four models correspond to four negative formats: No. 1 is a 6 x 6, No. 2 is a 6 x 9, No. 3 is a 6.5 x 11 cm, and No. 4 is an 8 x 11 cm.
According to the 1914 Butcher catalog, the construction is in mahogany, covered in Morocco leather; this is very doubtful for the No. 1, which is much cheaper and intended for beginners (even children). It is still mentioned that No. 1 has no diaphragm and only one viewfinder, making it very different from the illustration in the 1914 Butcher catalog. The one in the 1918 Photo-Plait catalog seems more accurate, even though the description mentions the presence of horizontal and vertical viewfinders, in contradiction with the engraving.
